The UAE Significantly Lowered Tariff Thresholds to Reduce Cross-Border Trade and Promote the Development of the Local Retail Industry

The UAE Customs announced that starting from January 1, 2023, the threshold for tariffs on international transport packages imported into the UAE will be reduced from AED 1,000 (approximately USD 272) to AED 300 (approximately USD 81). Any goods whose value exceeds the threshold will be subject to a 5 percent duty, as well as an administrative fee of AED 65 (approximately USD 17). This will spur local retailers to take significant product and marketing initiatives to enhance value propositions to attract and retain consumers looking for local alternatives.
