French luxury beauty brand Guerlain has released its first-ever documentary, Vanda Lan: The Orchid of Ten Thousand Generations, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Luc Jacquet, to commemorate the restoration of the orchid habitat on Tianzi Mountain in Yunnan, China.

For over a decade, Guerlain has been dedicated to the research of a single botanical ingredient through the creation of the Orchidarium—the brand’s first research platform of its kind. Comprising three research centers, the Orchidarium is committed to the discovery, study, and preservation of orchids. It includes the Orchid Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland; the Basic Research Laboratory; and the Orchid Reserve located in Yunnan, China.

The Tianzi Nature Reserve in Yunnan, China, now overseen by environmentalist Li Mingguo (pictured above right) from Xishuangbanna, is one of the world’s key biodiversity strongholds. On over 400 hectares of land, she researches orchids, works to restore the ecosystem, conserves orchid species, and reintroduces rare plant varieties into their natural habitat.

In this documentary, viewers follow botanist François Gérard (pictured above left) and Reserve Director Li Mingguo as they journey deep into the hidden world of Tianzi. Over the past 15 years, more than 20,000 orchids have been revived in the rainforest.

Out of more than 30,000 orchid species, Guerlain has carefully selected four rare varieties, including the Vanda orchid, Dendrobium chrysotoxum, and the Black Orchid, for their extraordinary regenerative properties. These orchids are key ingredients in the Orchidée Impériale skincare line.
