Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle
Recently, Frédéric Malle announced his decision to leave Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, the niche perfume brand he founded, at the end of June this year.
Born into a family of artists and perfumers, Frédéric Malle’s grandfather, Serge Hefler-Louiche, was a co-founder and the first CEO of Parfums Christian Dior. At the age of 20, Malle moved to New York University to study art history, where he developed his unique personal taste by integrating design, architecture, and contemporary art. Later, at the fragrance laboratory Laboratoires Roure, he worked alongside top perfumers for many years, becoming an expert in perfume formulation and raw materials.
Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle was established in Paris in 2000. At that time, Frédéric Malle, as a “perfume publisher,” brought together 15 master perfumers from around the world, offering them complete creative freedom and providing them with superior raw materials to develop personalized perfumes without the constraints of time, budget, or marketing, aiming to “establish a direct connection between the industry’s best perfumers and the most discerning public.” In creating this “publishing house” that sold perfumes by some of the world’s most renowned perfumers instead of books, “I created a platform where (the perfumers’) sense of smell could fully express itself, and they were proud of their work to the extent that they wanted to sign their names on the perfumes.”
In 2015, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle was acquired by the American luxury beauty giant Estée Lauder Companies, with Frédéric Malle continuing as the brand’s helmsman. In 2020, to celebrate the brand’s twentieth anniversary, Frédéric Malle published a book that compiled his various inspirations and creations, titled “Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle: The First Twenty Years.”
Recently, Frédéric Malle collaborated with the Swedish fashion brand Acne Studios to create the first perfume, Acne Studios par Frédéric Malle, which was officially launched on April 17.
